A respect for education

From a very early age, I knew my parents were very serious about education. Before I learned to read, my mother read to us children at every opportunity. Her romantic streak shone through in the choices of her stories (legends of King Arthur, 1001 Arabian Nights, and other fantastic tales) but she instilled within me a love of books, of reading and of learning.

My mother told us stories about her father and how he taught himself (having only a 6th grade education) how to write calligraphy and how to run a business.
